Grant Highlights: Strengthening Essential Support Services

Author Natalie Pinon, Interim CEO

Essential support services play a vital role in helping people through some of the most challenging moments in their lives. From emergency medical care and addiction recovery to specialist support following traumatic events, these services provide critical assistance when people need it most.

Philanthropy can help strengthen these organisations and the services they provide, supporting everything from essential infrastructure and new facilities to specialist programmes that help people recover and rebuild their lives. Here are three examples of how grants recommended by NPT UK donors are helping essential support services reach the people and communities who rely on them.

Strengthening emergency medical response

When a serious medical emergency occurs, access to advanced care can make a critical difference. One grant of £800,000 supported an organisation providing advanced emergency medical care by air and road across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The organisation delivers critical care to seriously ill and injured people, alongside providing aftercare, community lifesaving training and clinical research. The grant contributed to the establishment of a new air base in Cambridge, helping to maintain and strengthen the infrastructure needed to deliver rapid emergency response across the region.

Creating dedicated spaces for addiction recovery

For people affected by drug and alcohol addiction, access to appropriate treatment and a supportive environment can be an important part of the journey towards recovery.

A £750,000 grant supported a UK organisation providing residential rehabilitation and community outreach to people affected by addiction. The funding contributed to the acquisition of a property in Northern Ireland that will provide a dedicated setting for people experiencing drug addiction to receive treatment and work towards long-term recovery. By helping establish a dedicated treatment environment, philanthropic funding can support organisations to expand and strengthen the spaces in which essential services are delivered.

Supporting recovery from sexual violence

Specialist services are also essential in helping people recover from traumatic experiences and move forward with confidence.

A £20,000 grant supported the support and recovery service of an organisation providing free and confidential support to women and girls affected by rape, sexual violence and sexual abuse in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The service provides specialist support to girls aged 13 to 18, helping them process their experiences, develop coping strategies and move forward. The grant is helping sustain a service designed specifically around the needs of young people recovering from sexual violence.

These grants demonstrate the breadth of ways philanthropy can strengthen essential support services. Whether helping to develop emergency-response infrastructure, create dedicated spaces for addiction treatment or provide specialist support for young people, philanthropic funding can help organisations build capacity and provide vital services to those who need them.
