Beyond Borders: How Donors Can Show Support This World Refugee Day

Author John Canady, Chief Executive Officer

The United Nations has declared June 20 every year as World Refugee Day to honour refugees around the globe. Its goal is to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution and to help to mobilise political will and resources to help them. Philanthropy can play a critical part in addressing the global refugee crisis. Whether through small grassroots grants or large-scale humanitarian aid, donors can help ensure that displaced individuals receive protection and support. Here are some examples of how organisations are supporting this critical issue.

Acting locally

At the community level, philanthropic support can strengthen organisations that assist refugees and asylum seekers with basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. Local charities provide vital services like language classes, mental health support, legal aid, job readiness training, and community integration activities. These organisations often serve as a first point of contact, helping refugees navigate unfamiliar systems and access the services they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

Acting regionally

At the national and regional level, philanthropic funding can strengthen organisations working across cities and countries to provide more coordinated and scalable support. These organisations may assist refugees with long-term housing, employment, education, and legal status. They also often act as a bridge between local service providers and organisations trying to influence national policy. Philanthropy can also play a role in helping organisations that are raising awareness about the refugee crisis within their local communities.

Acting globally

The refugee crisis is a global issue that necessitates a coordinated international response. Philanthropy has the potential to play a powerful role in supporting large-scale international humanitarian efforts often through international NGOs. People affected by conflict or displaced by natural disasters or political instability often face severe challenges, including lack of access to basic healthcare, clean water, safe shelter, and legal protection.

In addition to funding direct services, donors can support organisations that advocate for refugee protection policies and hold governments accountable for the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

World Refugee Day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with displaced people around the world. Whether you wish to support local programmes or contribute to international relief efforts, philanthropy can be a powerful force for change.
