Celebrating Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is a worldwide movement that inspires generosity and celebrates the power of giving. Founded in 2012, it was created to encourage philanthropy following the more consumer-driven days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, Giving Tuesday is on 2nd December 2025.
Giving Tuesday’s goal is to “Unleash the Power of Radical Generosity Around the World.” It is a global network that works year-round to inspire generosity and make it a part of everyday life. The movement provides online resources to help charities and donors promote philanthropy, with the hope that the giving spirit sparked on Giving Tuesday continues throughout the year.
There are many ways to participate in Giving Tuesday in the UK, including volunteering time, giving money, campaigning for something, sharing skills, fundraising for an organisation or cause, donating goods, and purchasing something from a charity shop. Any act of kindness or generosity, big or small, counts as part of Giving Tuesday.
Giving Tuesday builds on the fact that the final few weeks of the year are some of the most important for charities as they aim to reach their fundraising goals. People seem to feel most charitable at the end of the year, during what many call “Giving Season.” Around 30% of all annual giving in the UK occurs in December alone, in part because of Giving Tuesday initiatives.
However, the Giving Tuesday movement does not position itself as the only, or best, route through which to donate to charity. Charities require regular donations recurring throughout the year. The Giving Tuesday initiative successfully shines a spotlight on giving, starts conversations about our ability to do good, and encourages those who care deeply about social impact to learn how they can generate positive results with their donations or time. The ultimate goal is to promote philanthropy throughout the year.
