Climate Giving: Using Donor-Advised Funds to Support Environmental Causes
Climate change has become one of the defining issues shaping philanthropy today. Increasingly, clients, particularly younger generations, want their charitable giving to reflect their concerns about the environment, biodiversity and long-term sustainability. For private client advisors, this presents an opportunity to help clients develop thoughtful, strategic approaches to climate philanthropy.
While many donors are motivated to respond to environmental challenges, they are often unsure where to begin. The breadth of organisations working in the sector, the complexity of climate solutions and the long-term nature of environmental change can make giving feel overwhelming. Advisors can add significant value by helping clients turn their interest into a structured philanthropic strategy.
Here are four considerations when discussing climate philanthropy with your clients.
Start with the client’s goals
Some clients are passionate about conserving natural habitats or protecting endangered species. Others may be interested in accelerating clean energy innovation, supporting climate justice, improving food systems or funding scientific research.
Rather than beginning with specific organisations, start by understanding what motivates your client. Questions such as “What environmental issue concerns you most?” or “What legacy would you like your philanthropy to create?” can help uncover priorities that shape a more meaningful giving strategy.
As with all philanthropy, the most effective giving starts with clearly defined objectives.
Balance immediate needs with long-term solutions
Climate philanthropy often involves supporting work whose impact may take years to become fully realised. At the same time, environmental disasters frequently create urgent humanitarian needs requiring immediate charitable support.
Clients may wish to balance both approaches by recommending grants to organisations responding to current crises while also investing in charities working on long-term environmental resilience, conservation or policy development. Helping clients think across different time horizons can create a more balanced and resilient philanthropic portfolio.
Think beyond a single grant
Many environmental challenges cannot be addressed through one-off donations alone. Advisors can encourage clients to think about building longer-term relationships with charities whose work aligns with their values.
Multi-year support can help charities plan more effectively, invest in innovation and measure outcomes over time. Clients may also choose to support a range of organisations across complementary areas (for example, combining conservation projects with climate education).
A diversified approach can help donors contribute to both immediate environmental improvements and systemic change.
How a donor-advised fund (DAF) can help
A DAF can provide an efficient platform for supporting environmental causes. Clients can contribute a range of assets, receive the applicable tax benefits at the time of their charitable contribution, and recommend grants to eligible charities over time as their philanthropic priorities develop. This flexibility is particularly valuable in climate philanthropy, where priorities can evolve in response to new scientific research, policy developments or natural disasters.
Your clients can also support a mix of organisations with a DAF, allowing their philanthropy to adapt alongside the changing needs of the sector.
