How to Help Your Global Family Clients With Their Philanthropy

Author John Canady, Chief Executive Officer

Wealthy individuals, their families and their businesses’ financial interests reach beyond international borders. Global families span not only multiple generations, but their philanthropy also spans many jurisdictions and communities. Across the world, donor-advised funds (DAFs) are increasingly used by donors as an alternative to setting up their own charitable trust or foundation.

For your global family clients, here are some of the advantages of having a DAF as part of their global wealth structures:

Your clients can create a multi-generational framework for their family’s philanthropy: With a DAF, your clients may involve their children and other family members in giving decisions so that the next generation can learn and become committed to making a difference. To build a charitable legacy, your clients may also establish a DAF in perpetuity.

A DAF can be used alongside other philanthropic structures: Your global clients may already have a charitable foundation in their home country.  They may use a DAF as a complement to existing structures to manage their giving in other parts of the world.  They may also use their UK-based DAF to build a philanthropic endowment, and make contributions offshore.

You clients can support charities around the world: With a DAF, your clients can give to charities anywhere in the world. NPT UK will conduct the necessary due diligence on the recipient charity and handle all regulatory administration.

DAF assets can be managed by the investment manager of your clients’ choice: For higher value DAFs, your clients may recommend that the DAF assets be managed by a specific investment manager. This is an attractive feature to global families, who may have dedicated private investment managers.

Your clients can have peace of mind for regulatory compliance: A DAF is simple to use, cost effective and tax efficient. NPT UK assumes all regulatory and reporting responsibilities which allows your clients to focus on their giving and the impact they want to achieve.
